HyCarb is a Portuguese deep-tech spin-off from the University of Porto, founded in 2024, developing breakthrough solutions for affordable, low-carbon hydrogen production. HyCarb is proprietary of Intermediate Temperature Catalytic Methane Splitting (IT-CMS) technology that converts methane – from natural gas, biogas, LFG or biomethane – into clean hydrogen and high-value graphitic carbon, without direct CO2 emissions. By producing hydrogen locally and leveraging existing gas infrastructure, HyCarb offers a resilient, modular and scalable alternative to conventional electrolysis and carbon-intensive hydrogen pathways. Containerised units are designed for industrial integration, enabling decentralised hydrogen production while simultaneously generating a strategic solid carbon co-product with applications in advanced materials, energy storage, defence and electronics. Backed by patented reactor design, catalyst innovation and strong academic collaboration, HyCarb bridges cutting-edge research and industrial deployment. HyCarb’s mission is clear: reduce dependence, build resilience and accelerate the energy transition through practical, economically viable technology.

ACTIVITIES

in ZeroCarb

Within Project ZEROCARB, HyCarb leads WP3 (Demonstrative IT-CMS Plant Validation in a Relevant Environment) and WP4 (Roadmap to Market).

WP3 aims to design, build, optimise, and validate a demonstrative IT-CMS plant in a relevant environment (TRL 6). HyCarb will lead the plant design, construction, Balance of Plant (BoP), and reactor integration. The system will be fully tested for functionality and safety, ensuring produced H2 complies with ISO 14687:2019. HyCarb will also coordinate 2,500 hours (ca. 3.5 months) of stand-alone stability testing, targeting less than 10 % catalytic activity loss. Nominal hydrogen productivity is 2 kg H2·h-1 at 750 °C and 1 bar. Additionally, HyCarb will lead the life cycle, techno-economic, and social assessments.

WP4 focuses on Customer Discovery to strengthen product-market fit and identify high-value use cases for hydrogen and graphitic carbon. HyCarb will coordinate the business model and business plan, defining strategic goals and execution pathways, as well as regulatory and compliance assessments covering applicable legislation, standards, and industry requirements for market entry. Capwatt will support refinement of the hydrogen commercialization strategy, targeting sectors such as petrochemicals, ammonia, and methanol, including replacement of cogeneration systems. Bedimensional will lead the solid carbon commercialization strategy, detailing the go-to-market approach and business model to assess the viability of the carbon by-product.
